B.C.C. "What's New?" By Deneen Foster (January 3, 2011) WORKOUT HOUR* In order to assist everyone in starting the New Year off in the right direction, we have established a workout hour every Monday, from 5-6 pm, to help you achieve that goal. Renee Allison will be available to show you how to use the strength-training machines and cardio equipment, and help you establish a routine you can build on as you get stronger. A workout log will be provided to keep track of your progress. Join Renee, Monday, January 3, and get started on your New Year. WILD AND WACKY WEDNESDAYS*Beginning Wednesday, January 5, students can join Deneen and Renee for a fun-filled hour of games in the gymnasium. Activities will be from 3:45-4:45 pm, every Wednesday. Students will need to be at least 11 years of age, or accompanied by a sibling that is at least 11 years of age. Transportation to BCC from Berryville Schools is available via bus #82. Drop in and be prepared to be active and have a good time! WORKOUT PARTY*Do you have exercise videos laying around the house? They were certainly bought with the best of intentions, but it is hard maintain a fitness routine by yourself. Good News! BCC is organizing a Workout Party every Friday, starting January 7, at 5 pm. We will use those very videos you have purchased and have a great time keeping each other motivated. SWIM CLUB*BCC Swim Club resumes practice February 1. Swimmers should be at a level ready for stroke development or higher. Practices will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5 pm. Swim instructors, Glenda and Renee Allison, have a goal of building a solid team that might one day compete in swim meets. Swimming provides a total body workout and builds coordination. B.C.C. "What's New?" By Deneen Foster (November 22, 2010) Come see our community orchestra, boasting 30 volunteer members from around the community; perform music that will touch your heart and light up your Christmas spirit! This orchestra, conducted by Ken Smith, is in its 7th year and going strong. The concert will have a variety of music from pop, to jazz, to Christmas favorites and will have an intermission with complimentary coffee and cookies. This concert will be a fundraiser to help support the yearly scholarship given to high school seniors. Tickets will be available at the Berryville Community Center front desk ($5 for adults, $3 for students.) In the spirit of the holiday season, BCC invites you to participate in the collection of toiletries and non-food items to be donated to the local food bank, Loaves and Fishes. According to a Loaves and Fishes coordinator, Jeannie Thompson, it was suggested that the following items would be in great need: body soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, detergents, toothbrushes, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies. The BCC staff hopes you will join us in helping others during this season of giving. Keep in mind during the holiday rush; it is important to maintain your fitness routine, or to start one. BCC offers two yoga classes weekly to help maintain flexibility and relieve stress; Tuesday evenings, 6-7:30 pm and Wednesday mornings, 10-11:30 am. Aqua Aerobics offers low-impact exercise, perfect for those with arthritis, joint injuries, and stiff muscles. BCC offers Aqua Aerobics Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:30-10:30 am, and 6:45-7:45 pm. A BCC membership is required and a small class fee applies. BCC Programs and Aquatics director, Renee Allison, is offering swim lessons this fall/winter. B.C.C. "What's New?" By Deneen Foster (SEPTEMBER 8, 2010) Berryville Community Center will resume its fall/winter hours beginning Sunday, September 12. The hours, 12:30-5:30 pm, will however, be different than previous years. Evening yoga classes, instructed by Ramona McNeal, began Tuesday, September 7. The eight-week program focuses on relaxing and rejuvenating those who feel stiff and tired, or those who are recovering. The fee is $8 per class and participants must have a BCC membership. Evening water aerobics classes, led by Mallory Clark, continue Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 6:45-7:45. Class cost is $3 per class or 12 classes for $30, and a BCC membership is required. COMING SOON—Berryville Community Center announces a fall adult co-ed volleyball league to begin mid-October. The league will host a maximum of 8 teams or a minimum of 4 teams, taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cost for the 9-week league is $120 per team. The Berryville Community Center Foundation "Presents the Arts" would like to cordially invite the public to attend a cultural event like none other. The Naturally Brass Quintet from Northwest Arkansas Fayetteville region will be performing on Saturday, September 18th, at the Berryville Community Center, at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be available at the door for $7 or can be purchased earlier at the Berryville Community Center for $5. BCC presents “Walking to Mardi Gras”! This 25-week virtual walking program kicks off Monday, September 13. Participants log miles walked daily and progress from Berryville to New Orleans just in time for Fat Tuesday, March 8, 2011. A $20 fee will help defer the costs of the program, which will include a pedometer and log book. BCC will chart your progress on a map located in the BCC foyer, which will be updated every Monday. Ten milestones will be celebrated with New Orleans inspired tokens, and a Fat Tuesday potluck will culminate the event. The first person to arrive in New Orleans will be crowned King/Queen of the event. BCC encourages businesses to promote the event as a group, or gather your friends and form your own group. The result is an ensemble with the energy and sound that brings to life music of all genres. The musicians of Naturally Brass are accomplished individually and perform in other various ensembles, from big bands to community concert bands, and orchestras, both locally and regionally. Naturally Brass performs for school band programs, band camps, for private functions such as weddings and corporate events, at performing arts v enues, and gives a summer-long 'Concert in the Park' series. The group is dedicated to the notion that people from all walks of life can enjoy the benefits of musical performance for a lifetime, and through it's performances encourages all to pick up that horn an play again, whatever the genre may be (yes, even woodwinds!). Naturally Brass is dedicated to presenting musical arrangements which retain the integrity of the original compositions, as well as bringing grins, applause, and excitement to our audiences. Besides their music they must have been clowns in a former life. They bring a wonderful sense of humor with their music. |

By Deneen Foster (AUGUST 3, 2010) CALLIGRAPHY CLASS Join Calligraphy instructor, Julie Turner, Saturday, August 7, 9 am until 12:30 pm, and you, too, can have beautiful handwriting. The $20 prepaid class will have a minimum of 7 students, and you will need to bring a calligraphy pen and ruled notebook paper. If the minimum number of students is not met, the $20 fee will be refunded. Come by BCC to sign up! BCC membership is NOT required to take this class. FREE SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES Tuesday, August 10, 1-4 pm, BCC’s karate instructors, Sensei Fred Anderson and Sensei Nancy Anderson, will be offering a FREE self-defense class for teens 13+. On Thursday, August 12, there will be a FREE women’s self-defense class offered from 5:30-8 pm. All teen participants will need a parent/guardian signed release before participating. Sensei Fred is a retired police officer with 25 years experience in a major metropolitan area and 24 years of martial arts expertise. The classes will focus on developing street awareness, understanding the dynamics of the street, and defining the profile of a predator, which will allow the student to better understand how to avoid an attack. Hands-on class instruction is designed to give students confidence in defending themselves as well as developing awareness. Aqua Aerobics Berryville Community Center announces evening aqua aerobics beginning the week of August 30, 2010. Classes will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 6:45-7:45 pm. The classes, led by Mallory Clark, provide the opportunity to improve cardio fitness, condition muscles, increase flexibility, and change body composition. By Deneen Foster (April 27, 2010) The Berryville Community Center and Dr. Eric Spann, St. John's Clinic, present MASTERING STRESS; the problem, solutions, and science of stress reduction in the 21st century. This FREE adult education class will be Monday, May 3, 6-8 p.m., at BCC. Eighty to ninety-five percent of disorders diagnosed and treated are related to, brought on by, or made worse by stress. Much research has revealed new findings about the effects of, and successful therapies for stress disease. Many of the discoveries of the 1990's have shocked the world of neurology and psychology. This two-hour educational and motivational seminar will focus on helping individuals identify, manage, reduce, convert, and overcome the problems that "stress us out." |
B.C.C. "What's New?" By Deneen Foster (April 2, 2010) Summer Youth Program Registration Berryville Community Center's Summer Youth Program registration will begin Monday, April 12, at 6:30 am. To qualify for SYP, a child must between the ages of 5-12, and have completed kindergarten. Students are accepted on a first-come basis, and the program will run from June 7-August 13. A $30 deposit is required at registration. Cost for the program is $60 a week, $15 per day or $7.50 per half day for part-time students. SYP creates a fun-filled summer as students swim, cook, attend field trips, host guest speakers, enjoy daily outdoor recreation time and many other exciting events. Program director, Mallory Clark, and staff counselors are on hand to assure a quality program for all. |

B.C.C. "What's New?" By Deneen Foster (September 1, 2009) BCC's Tumbling Class, instructed by Mallory Clark, is an acrobatic class offered for preteens and teens ages 6-16. The class focuses on strength building, flexibility and basic tumbling skills such as back bends, standing back bends, hand stands, cartwheels, round offs, tec. It is beneficial to those involved in cheer squads, dance classes, and anyone wanting to strengthen and tone. Both beginner and intermediate classes are offered, with a class limit of ten students. Teeny Tumblers, ages 3-5, also taught be Mallory Clark, lays the foundation for athletic movement through a variety of fun activities designed to develop balance, strength, motor skills and control. This class will be Thursday, 9:30 am or 1 pm, and is limited to four students per class. Pam Stockman, BCC dance instructor, announces the 2009 fall dance schedule. Classes, which begin the week of August 17, include Creative Movement; Beginning Ballet/Tap; Advanced Modern Jazz; Ballet/TapII; Intermediate Ballet/Tap; and Beginning Modern Jazz. Classes are available ages 3 and up. Fiddle/Violin lessons, instructed by Dr. Fred Mayer, resume Tuesday, September 8th. Classes are available for youth and adults. Topics of discussion will be dowloading files, backing-up pictures, editing, printing options, storage and protection. The follow-up class will discuss traditional scrapbooking and digital scrapbooking with hands-on instruction. The classes will be 6-8 pm each night. Call Deneen at 870-423-3139 to preregister. BCC is researching installation of a protective shield in the racquetball loft to allow safer viewing of racquetball games. Upon completion of this project, the loft will be accessible to adults and to minors with permission. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 10 am until 12 noon, free child care will be available for those adults using the facility at that time. Please register your children by calling 870-423-3139. Jolene Krutz, of Photography by Jolene, will be hosting her second series of free adult education in digital photography. The class will be four consecutive Tuesdays, beginning June 16, from 6:30-8 pm. Please preregister by calling 870-423-3139, or register at the front desk of BCC. Tuesday, June 23, children 5 years and up are invited to join Amanda Flake in a fun-filled beaded jewelry class from 10 am until noon. BCC has implemented an additional OPEN SWIM for swimmers under the age of 18. B.C.C. "What's New?" By Deneen Foster (May 18, 2009) BCC will begin our summer schedule Sunday, May 24, 2009. We will remain closed on Sundays through Sunday, September 6. Regular business hours will be Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 8 pm, and Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm. BCC will be closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. We will reopen Tuesday, May 26, at 6:30 am. On May 26, in conjunction with the Carroll County Extension office, BCC will host Caroll Guffy and Tamara Walkingstick, with the Arkansas Forestry Department. They will offer two presentations pertaining to the recent ice damage. At 2 pm, the focus will target the homeowner, and cover topics related to what to do after the storm. Cruicial information on pruning, damage beyond repair, and hazardous trees will be discussed. At 6 pm, the focus will be for the landowner. Do you have enough trees for a well-stocked forest? By Deneen Foster (January 10, 2009) Saturday, January 10, the Berryville Alliance of Churches presents "New Beginnings," a Christian rock concert, from 6-8 pm in the BCC banquet hall. The concert features WHITE HORSE BAND, and DASH 33, with speakers Rick Pearson and Karin Franklin Peter. Admission is a volunteer donation of a canned good. 2009 Berryville Community Center Adult Education kicks off Tuesday, January 13, 6-8 pm, with Dr. Ira Goodman, Ph.D, CH., GKCC. Dr. Goodman will be on hand to present a FREE talk on diet wellness. Dr. Goodman has been involved in food research, nutritutional education, and diet wellness coaching for over thirty years. Tuesday, January 20, 6-8 pm, Mateo Ramero will present a FREE segment to promote healthy living education for the community, including the Hispanic community. Friday, January 23, 6-8 pm, will start a FREE series to be presented by Dr. Wes Rice, DVM, and staff on The Family Pet Clinic. February is National Pet Dental Health month, and Dr. Rice will discuss prevention of diseases and problems that can result from poor dental health. In March, with warm weather returning, the topic will be flea and tick management. A date will be named later. |
